The Trolls of John Bauer, at 'FARP'

Fantasy Art Tutorials in the FARP Section

The trolls appears in the ancient Scandinavian folk tales where the deep, dark forests with their old pinetrees and moss-clad boulders are the source of tales of fantasy and myths.
The most characteristic of the Bauer trolls are their roots in the Swedish nature, almost appearing to have grown out from the moss and stones. But even if his trolls often are old, ugly and wrinkled they are not evil, jut a little stupid and very, very curious. The trolls never scare any children, and are often easily fooled by bold shepherds and young princes...

It is in the depiction of trolls that Bauers appears at his most original and personal. Bauer's troll may be a little mite under the root of a tree or a mountainous giant, but mostly they are of human size. They are as old as the hills and have grown out of nature - or rather, they embody the innate forces of nature. The forest has lent them their grey-green-brown colour and the animals their furs. Underneath the furs, they are ostentatiously decked out with necklaces, bracelets, and beautifully decorated knives - the riches of the mountains belong to the trolls. Arms and hands are gnarly and corse like tree branches and the head is mostly a big nose below two beady little eyes.

It is the eyes that make John Bauer's troll different, they seem so friendly. With their different and limited ways of thinking, the trolls do not understand the human world, but in their eyes we sense a good- natured and curious interest. With wonder they stare at the translucent Princess - how could they possibly harm her!
