Painting Space Scenes

Table of Contents | back | forward

I had never painted space before and looked forward to the challenge. A few key things with space are important. Tim Hildebrandt observed that space should not be mixed with too much black. A primary color should be a deep indigo blue rather than black. This technique did help bring the space scene more to life than I think it would have been had it been solid black behind the stars.

Some have criticized this piece because they feel it was too obviously using the air brush tool. I personally don't see anything wrong with the air brush tool when it is used for things that look soft and misty like a nebula. I have found that the digital airbrush is the least predictable. I prefer the detail air brush for most things, and there is a fine and coarse spray brush that can be nice for some texturing too.

For doing small dots like stars, I used the mouse rather than the stylus. The reason is that the stylus has a hard time doing a single point. It tends to only register pressure if there is slight movement involved. The mouse was easier to make the small intense dots. Make sure when you paint space that you pay attention to the way stars tend to cluster. Perfectly random spread out stars will not look very realistic.
