Basic 3D Mixed Media
By Ulises Rosas Garcia

Hi there!.
In this little article I will describe one of the many ways to create an epic space image using mixed media, in this pic, we will use the Vue D´Espirit, Universe, Illusion and Photoshop programs, remeber that this is a basic pic, not too complicated, if you want to use more complicated settings, then e-mail me and I will do a more complex FARP... I really hope that this will help you in your own space works!!!
VUE D´ESPIRIT SYSTEM
We will start this pic with Vue D´Espirit, first, create a simple new document with the default night atmosphere in Vue, we will change the parameters of the atmosphere later...

Now create a water plane in the program, you can find it in the left side bar...

Then change the main stats of the water in the Aspect dialog box, ( right side of the bar), you can choose between many water textures, only remember that one water with high refratction and deep will be fine... As you can see, I use Methane as material for the water...

let´s check how the image going, remember that you can render in the main camara view, only press F9...

Now is time to change the atmosphere parameters, there are so many clouds that we don´t want there, so press F3 for Sky and Clouds control menu, change the Thickness near horizon to 0%, for zero clouds, then change in Fog and Haze settings in Fog, the Uniform fog thickness to 490, (for blue halo), remember that fog color must be a dark blue...

Time for decisions!!!, we want some constructions in this planet, (I always liked the sea planets!!!), so we need some random constructions, you can create them in any other program, but here I will choose the predeterminated structures of Vue, so press Ctrl+L and we will choose that suspension bridge, it will look great in the final composition!...

now put this mesh in the correct place, you can choose between many different compositions and places for the bridge, I choose one of distant plane, remember to select a new material for the bridge, we don´t want meshes without materials here!

let´s check the general view of the camera, thinking in that we need some free space to put more things in the sky, I change the perspective in this way:

Nice image, isn´t it???, now time to shift to another program, render the image in 640*480 jpg format, and then go to Universe!!!

UNIVERSE SETTINGS
Welcome to Universe!!!, here we will add a few touches to the main rendered image, let´s see... first import your image into Universe:

put a Lens Flare in the background, use this settigns, it will be useful when we add the special effects to the pic...

now add a Star Cluster into the Flare, we want to simulate a Star Explosion, like a Supernova, put so many as you want, only not too much or it will be look like fireworks...

we are now ready to use Illusion, save your image as jpg and turn to Illusion!!!
ILLUSION SETTINGS
Welcome to Illusion!!!, import your image and look at all the marvelous effects that we can make here!, before to start, remember to have checked the Show Particles button...

use the April00 library and choose Red&Blue and 03_Space Explosion, put the main center of the pixels in the Flare that we make in Universe, check in the animation check box for a number that suits to both effects, as you can see, I used 18 as main number, so both effects will look good and don´t interfere one with another...

maybe you can add more effects to the Supernova, but remember that if there are so many effects the pic will lose the Star effect and it will be look like an airplane has exploded in the sky... so let´s it be as it is and turn to the last program!!!, save the image as single block and go to Photoshop!!!

PHOTOSHOP SETTINGS
we are now in Photoshop, open the main image and let´s check the color and all these stuff first... change the Brightness/Contrast +10 and +5 each one, then change the Color Balance, as it´s showing here:

and it´s done!!!, remember: this is a fast and not so complicated way to create a Supernova, there are other ways, but are a bit complicated... anyway, I have done this in 20 minutes, you can expend more time searching for better ways to recreate the same pic with the same tools, hope that this introductory farp help you to create more complicated images, and be ready, because in the next farp I will use mixed media to create a complex pic using Poser, Bryce, Illusion, Photoshop and ZBrush!!!

With the rays of light ending suddenly and the black lightened, you can see a box...not good! Use the blur tool to kill this box. Also, for a little more touch of realism, the rays should be longer in some parts...like when they are more vertical instead of diagonal, and then taper off as the rays go more diagonal. Otherwise, nice article! | |
