His eyes searched the heavens, hoping, pleading for an answer. Wisps of blonde hair, free from the thong he had it in curled about his face. Blue eyes reflected the fathoms of the night as he gazed, arms tight about his chest, heart in his throat. Tears curled from his eyes. They fell softly on his white shirt as he bowed his head, shaking with grief. Falling to his knees he sobbed bitterly, rocking back and forth. Thin wails rent the sky as the angels heart broke.

Gasping he lay back on the clouds. Her face smiled in his mind. He could almost feel her against his chest, her soft gold hair entwined about his fingers, light pulse under his hand. Her sweet smell enveloped him in memory. A sad smile lit his features, and he slept.

Red eyes flew open in the dark. A loud gasp echoed about the cavern as she woke. She had seen him. The angel of her dreams, she had seen him. And she had remembered. The mortal had remembered a tryst shared with the immortal. Running a hand through her raven hair she bit her lip in thought. Why? Why had she remembered this? And where was she?

Heavily she stood, pushing back what seemed like leaden covers. Slowly she made her way to a dimly lit corner of the room. A mirror hung on the wall, and she could see shapes taking form as she walked closer to it. Groggily she stared into the mirror, and screamed. Raven hair framed a bewitching face with eyes that bled. Dark wings sprouted from her back and her legs ended in claws. With a shriek she threw herself from the mirror and began to sob.

Sharp screams tore into his heart and he cried aloud. Springing up from the clouds he took to wing, determined to save the woman he loved, only to be shot down. The clouds formed massive hands that gripped his wings, tearing and maiming. Loud, agonized cries filled the sky as blood poured from his wounds. Bloody feathers littered the air. Wingless he fell. Lost, alone, and broken he fell to the sea below.

She heard his cries as in a dream. They made no sense. Who else was crying that night? And why could she hear them? Raising her head she moved toward the sound and found the entrance to her prison. Far out across the ocean she could see him falling.

Bones creaked and membranes snapped as she took flight. Launching herself from the precipice she soared out over the ocean, waves rising to meet her. “Wait! I’m coming!” she cried, unsure of whether or not she had said a word.

The wind whipped about him as he fell, unconscious toward oblivion. Sharp stabs awoke him, along with a cry, harsh and echoing. Blue eyes opened and dripped tears. Who..? His mind wondered sleepily. Looking over the horizon, he saw a creature all in darkness. A black winged demon. The pain in his heart flared anew. Oh my love, what have they done to you?

“Azriel!” she screamed, wings pumping madly in an effort to get to him faster. Then, as if the sea heard her, it seemed to rise up and swallow him. “NO!!!!!” vocal cords tore and blood welled in her mouth, yet still she screamed. Thoughtless of her own life she dove into the depths. Using wings as fins she soon reached his side. Wrapping her wings about him she kissed him tenderly. His eyes opened, and he caressed her hair. He looked to the surface through bloodstained water.

We’re too far down to make it back.

I know. He looked at her, sadness written on his face.

Leave me. I’m dying. You can still go back. She smiled, and caressed his cheek.

I don’t want to. Her lungs were burning and he was fading fast. Pulling him close she leaned against his chest. His arms enfolded her as it grew colder. I’ll never leave you Azriel. I love you. He tightened his hold on her.

I’ll always love you Damiana. Then all was silent. The dark waters claimed their bounty of two souls.

:-) Brittany Cali replies: "*blinks* Because it adds more emotion if they die? Actually I just felt it was fitting that they died in the end. I'm glad you liked it ^^ *hands you a box of tissues*"

Wow! That was really good! I think that their deaths fit. If they had lived it would not have been quite right, it is wonderful just how it is.

:-) Brittany Cali replies: "Thank you! I agree, if they had lived it just wouldn't have been quite right."

Wow! Not many texts I reach can tug at my heart, but this one did! very good work I must say...Maybe I'm evil ; ) but I love unhappy endings...they're more powerful to me
Keep up the good work love your stuff!

:-) Brittany Cali replies: "Aww, you're not evil. I must say I also prefer the unhappy ending. It's just so much more meaningful in some way, I think.
Thanks for stopping by!"

CURSES! Okay, as you can probably tell, the comment screen doesn't love the auto-formatting in my Word program... I think if you just run it through the extranet "reply" option once, most of that will clear up... I hope...

:-) Brittany Cali replies: "heh, elfwood is so weird"

~ ‘Thin wails rent the sky as the ***angels*** heart broke.’ #8220;angel&;#8217;s”

Eh... I’m impartial. Love, particularly in short pieces, usually affects not my cold, black heart. I did enjoy the vivid descriptions you used throughout this, though.

The thing that really, really bugged me in this was that they didn’t even try;/i> to make it back to the surface. In my mind, that’s completely unbelievable. If they had died trying to reach the surface, I might have had some reaction to this beyond “impartial.&;#8221; But when they did that, they ceased to be real in my mind. They were just characters that you were toying with, trying to make a statement. Unfeeling. Therefore, not exactly something to cry over when they ceased to exist on paper.

I’d also love to know just why she was deformed like that, but he was left in his merry little misery till he tried to help her, and then</i> ruthlessly killed off.

This the plot of this story does not do the vivid manner in which it was written justice. Expanding it a bit to explain more might be a wise decision, since the foundation of this seems to be their past...

:-) Brittany Cali replies: "Hrm. This is a story I've been meaning to do something with, but I haven't gotten around to it. But the reason that they didn't try to reach the surface was beause he had lost too much blood to swim and her wings were too heavy. Lame I know, but still, it's a logical excuse ^^"

An epic work, very emotional and inspiring, and well done. Like the characters, I would rather find true love, even in death and damnation, than spend eternity alone. But perhaps, that is a part of the tale behind the tale, the tests such lovers would go through(note the spelling of the last, out of respect for the writer on her home turf)-*grins* And the strength of feeling that would be born in that moment of declaration, and no return.

:-) Brittany Cali replies: "*grins back* Thankiees, I'm glad you enjoyed it ^^. And I agree that it is better to be damned and together than alone in eternity."

Sweet, if a little melodramatic. Must he be an Arayan angel? He could be so much more beautiful, creature of the clouds. Surely he grieves for his purity as well? I'd love to know the backstory to this one as well, how the perfect was seduced to take on mortality and sex, become a male for love of a thing doomed to die. Lisa Hardy Coleman has a fine take on things like this.

I'd like to see more of her wings.

SWEET ending. Score on the angst catharsis there. maybe a little watery slow-mo as their light dims?

:-) Brittany Cali replies: "I can be a tad melodramatic at times. I get carried away in my own angst ^^

Actually I wrote this after I'd finished a piece of another story I'm writing, "Moments In Time." And frankly I'm not really sure of the backstory on this. I don't know if there really is one. Azriel/Gabriel is a character I like fiddling with. Which I'm not really sure he appreciates ^^;;
Glad you enjoyed the ending."
