A poem I wrote for James Bowers' Death Knocks project. Took a bit of tweaking to get it how I want it... but I'm more or less proud with the finished product.

Curtains

"The clock has struck! - my child, my dear.
But take my hand; no, don't you fear.
At twelve o'clock up death will rise,
But calm your heart and close your eyes.

"No, no, my child - what's that you hear?
The shadows speak? Now, that's quite queer.
Hush and settle, my darling sweet.
Please be still now, to sleep retreat.

"What's that? You weep! It's quite alright.
There's naught to fear, deep in the night -
So long as you don't make a sound,
I'm sure safety will you surround.

"I cannot stay so please lie still.
Bedtime stories? You've had your fill.
My throat will sing not one more song,
Shh, shh, sweetness - you must be strong!

        "Ignore the dancing firelight,
And all the things that shake the night.
Let off my hand and lay you back,
They'll be no spooks decked out black.

"Sup'stition haunts you, this I know,
Gaze fondly 'pon your nightlight's glow.
Worry not for no black cats stalk;
Grip tight sleep's hand, in dreams you'll walk.

"Oh? You say that my palm's grown cold?
How strange, how odd! The night's not old.
That knocking? Ah, it's just the breeze.
So quell the shaking of your knees.

"The clock chimes! No, it's not quite one.
But fear, my child, your time's near done.
You should have gone to sleep, sweet love,
Yet now the knock will sound above.

"You'll cry at first, but take her hand,
I know in time you'll understand.
What's that you say? You want to stay?
I think not, but for you I'll pray.

"My face has changed? Pay it no mind.
If you'd've slept this would be kind;
But no such luck, you stubborn lass!
You hear her moan? She'll not you pass.

"She sighs on those whose hearts flutter,
Speak up! I can't hear your mutter -
You're scared? Frightened! No, no, be calm.
Breathe deep and your fear try to qualm.

"Oh, here she comes! Do not be scared,
For your soul is to her now bared.
You see her hov'ring o'er your bed?
Let of the covers; clear your head.

"Reach not for me; I let you go.
But scream your fear, my fledgling crow.
While you depart I merely wait
And wish for you a kinder fate -

"Then what mine was! To have to see,
My daughter taken far from me.
Yet still I'll close curtains and turn
To watch all of my mem'ries burn.

"Do you dance there, my darling dear?
Do you revel in what was fear?
Do you look up and see me cry?
When dark rainbows fall from the sky?

"Yet I rejoice! I laugh and cheer!
The dark has passed, the truth is clear!
The curtains part and I can see,
That Death has come now to take me."

*side of mouth twitches up* You know what, I knew they were lying. The words you used made it sound like they were allready dead. *mouth twitches again*. I think I like it. Alot.

creeeepy! I love how it is so musical, as if they were singing it. It really does grip you.

Ooooooooooh!!!
How grand! It has a very lovely Edgar Allen Poe feel to it. I love the old style language and its haunting melody that was inscripted in my mind as I read it.
Very nice work - keep it up! *victory sign*

After almost two years, I’ve been considering resuscitating “The Project” -- if so, would you be interested? I expect it would again operate in the same fashion as the earlier editions, and I will attempt to gather a group consisting of former contributors as well as “newbies”… If this sounds like “fun” to you, email me (or just drop by my Wyverns shelf) to let me know!

Ah, such a mesmerizing darkness, Emily (and you should pay heed to that Creative Writing teacher's suggestion)... Hope you can find time to help me breathe life back into "The Project"...

That was a great poem with haunting lyrics. I like the twist and how you build up to it.

This is very emotive and strong in voice. I love the poem ending on the thought that we need not fear death, but rejoice in it.

This is an absolutely wonderful poem! I love the flow and the story in it. Keep up the good work!

Normally, I don't even finish reading a poem if it rhymes. I finished this one though, and I'm even commenting. This gets my vote for Creepiest Poem on Elfwood.
