SciFi and Fantasy Art: Bean-sidhe

My version of a Banshee. This ghostly faerie has forshadowed countless deaths and disasters in the dark history of the world. Known by so many names, the banshee's frightening appearance is only outdone by her bone-chilling wail.

Actually this is one of the many ways to spell it. Mostly depends on which language/dialect you are picking it up from.

very effectful! I must say, you are very talented!

Oh, it's beautiful. In the sense of her nature, of course ^~.Not many people capture the true description of the banshee (bean-sidhe), with the red eyes and...well, everything you've done with the picture. Right down to the rags. It's so well done.

Well she would certainly scare the heck out of me... 2 I think it's a wonderful interpretation of a bean-sidhe. It looks like a few drawings I've done when I'm in a dark mood.

Sorry to see that some people have left ignorant comments about this pic. There is such a thing as being open-minded...

I think this a wonderful picture. The style is really unique, and does the subject justice indeed. I hope to see some more of this style.

I agree with American Banshee! And I think your reply to her message was rude! She was just expressing how she felt about the banshee and I think your lack of knowledge on the Bean Sidhe doesn't say much for you as an artist! You should research your ideas before you put them on paper! Im only a quarter irish and I knew all about the Bean Sidhe. I decided to get her tattooed on my back but before I did, I studied her first. That way the picture on my back would be a fact not an imagination

:-) Kami Roshoun Hines replies: "It's called Artistic License. Go tell Picasso that real people don't look like his cubist paintings. Or better yet, go away!"

I think this is a very good representation of a Banshee, from her haddardly appearance to her black teeth. Nice work!

I find it very interesting that a single picture of a mythological creature can raise so very much controversy. In my opinion, as an artist, disagreeing with a represented image does not make that image "bad art". Witness the experience of artists such as Monet, who, though world-famous in our time, were reviled for lack of professionalism in their time.
The artist, however, should be proud of herself for actually managing to bring up so much passion, negative or otherwise, about her work. It's not the image of a banshee that I had in my head, but it is a very interesting new idea. Thank you for providing me with a new viewpoint.

well... since the "banshee" is Irish, you might consider the modern Irish or traditional Gaelic spelling of this spirit. Either way, it IS Bain Sidhe which translated means female spirit. She sits on walls, lamenting and kreening outside of homes foretelling of an iminent death within the family inside.

I am curious about the origin of the spelling "Bean Sidhe" 2

The spelling actually varies depending on where you come from it might be Bain sidhe in Ireland but in Scotland it is spelled Bean sidhe
