SciFi and Fantasy Art: Cake: 'TheFlying Sword'

The Flying Sword may be the most feared of the pirate ships of Rostand. Her red sails catch the fullest wind, but alwaysd seem to hang ragged. The figurehead, a Spanish lady with raven locks and crimson flounces is known to sing the destruction of any who would defy Captain Redhand. Mermaids and dolphins swim at her bow, for luck rides always on a fair wind with the Flying Sword.

This was one of the most enjoyable things I have ever created, and this is the first time I have ever tried to create a cake like this...  For cake it is!

A pirate ship created entirely in edibles; it's mostly cake and buttercream frosting. This was a collaboration between myself and K. Hawley as a gift for her daughter's birthday.

Slightly  out of focus on the left side is a mermaid sculpted out of almond paste. The face of the figurehead is also almond paste, while the flowers in her "hair" are actual edible flowers, inclusing roses, mullein, and geraniums as well as mint leaves.. the masts are made of chocolate taffy candy, while the sails are a home-made raspbery fruit leather, tied on with strawberry licrice bootlaces. The cannons are chocolate-covered cookie sticks, and the railings are pretzels. Last, an ice-cream cone serves as her crow's nest.

If I post further photos there will be more images of the mermaids and the dolphins that accompanied the ship.

K. Hawley did most of the baking, and we worked on frosting and sculpture together. It was one of the more fulfilling things I have created. Not just ful-filling, but filling! Because just a few minutes after completion... We ate it!

(This is also why the background is less than perfect. It was unmovable  once constructed, and there was no time for posed shots.)

I have full permission to publish photos of this piece.
