This is a picture that just flowed onto the paper. I was intrigued by a plant I saw while walking, so I went home and drew it. Then I thought it would look better behind the ear of an elf. So I drew the ear, and then the head just sort of was created. I figured the coloring of a wood elf would display the flowers to the best effect, and so she became a wood elf. Some people would say it looks like me... and they would be right, except for the colors: I'm very pale and never tan. I did use my measurements to make the head... eye to ear 3 inches, etc... (possibly the strangest way to do a "self-portrait" type picture...) In case you are wondering, the flowers are witch hazel. The scientific name for this particular type of witch hazel is Hamamelis vernalis (hence her name). I didn't know it at the time, but it certainly fits the picture. And yes, I know the shading on the ear is off. I have a terrible time with shading inside ears. I also messed up a little on shading the neck. All in all, though, I am pleased with how the picture turned out. Drawn in February 2007. Hamamelis vernalis blooms through the winter, so I kept seeing it as I walked around. I'm not used to flowers in winter yet... I don't know how long it took to make. I drew the sketch very quickly, but the coloring took a while. Pencil with colored pencils. No ink. Unusual for me, but I wanted a more natural/real look to the piece.
