October 13, 2004. India ink and water applied with a rather large calligraphy brush on some sort of stiff, bristol-like paper that has been sitting in a box in my basement for at least 10 years and possibly longer.
It seems like every time I start randomly doodling, I end up with this phoenix-dragon creature. You've already seen it in my notebook sketches (though I've actually drawn it at least 10 more times that you haven't seen). This time I was playing with the india ink and calligraphy brush that I bought for my drawing class, just making random scribbles, when they turned into the thing on the left. I started experimenting with the mixture of ink and water, and found that I could make a really nifty feather effect. So I tried to make a better second version, and came up with the one on the right. Still mediocre. I decided that I should devote an entire page to a very carefully done third version, which is elsewhere in my gallery.
