M'hali Field Guide: The Mudrat

This little rat-sized critter was very fun to create. I figured that the plains in M'hali's world have a lot of beasts running around and I wanted to make something that lives only at the rivers, besides the fishies. The mudrat is put together using bits of inspiration from a rat, beaver and opossum. I'll let you guess which bits are from which animal. ;) They have features to help them swim and maintain body temps, like a flat tail and oily coat. They also have cute little ears that look like 'possum ears, but can be closed when the mudrat swims. I also gave them webbed feet like a beaver, but the structure of the foot is more like a 'possum's. This busy little creature creates burrows that have entrances under water, somewhat like a beaver's den, but the mudrat digs its own den right into the river bank as opposed to building one of mud and sticks. A male and female will share a den with their offspring and guard it jealously from other mudrats. My favorite part about these guys is the fact that they sing at night. I'd love to sit on the river bank at night and listen to them. :D
