Alice's Masquerade

A conceptual look at Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The assignment was to take the story and make it relate to ourselves somehow. I've always loved masquerades and the masks that people wear. I chose to put the characters of Alice and the Cheshire Cat in masks, acting as if in a masquerade. The roses, of course, are symbolic of the story. Although roses represent the queen rather than Alice, the queen's roses were actually white, but only painted red. In the second painting I'll be doing of the Queen of Hearts and the White Rabbit, she will be surrounded by roses also, but dripping red paint. So, I suppose, since Alice was the 'sanest' one there, she gets the 'true' red roses. Watercolor and colored pencil on illustration board, 9X12 inches
