My friend Sarah's mother works as a cook on a ship and this Christmas holiday, Sarah told me that her mum was stopped in a canal, where she was able to give her a Christmas present and see her after months on the ship. I wrote back to Sarah's email, imagining her mum was like a mermaid in the canal, not able to be on dry land. I had a new idea for a drawing and that was of a mermaid who's kids were land lubbers. Sarah's family also lived in Newfoundland for a while, so I wanted to make sure it was East Coasty and chilly looking. Sarah, I don't know what you're mum looks like, but apparantly she has a Wilma Flintstone/Mayonnaise the Mermaid hair do. And of course, your swirly dwirly hair is there. I really like that fur trimmed tweed coat you don't have in real life. Get one! I like drawing big blank eyes and nearly expressionless faces.
