A phoenix I drew for the cover of the literary magazine of my high school. The pose is based on that of a heron.
I sometimes get asked, "why do your phoenixes have three legs?" Long ago, while researching phoenixes, I read somewhere that the Chinese phoenix has three legs. I thought that would be an excellent way to depict a bird that made it clearly supernatural. So, all my phoenixes have three legs.
Update on this: when some friends of mine, including a friend from China, saw this picture, they too questioned the three-legged thing. One of them laughingly suggested that my source had been mistranslated, and that it really meant that phoenixes have three toes. I had no defense, since I couldn't remember where I had read it, but a few days later my Chinese friend actually found a reference to phoenixes having three legs. So there!
