2003 - 'Chasing the Wind'

This unicorn is very much inspired by the work of Susan Seddon Boulet. Although I am obviously much less skilled at it, this is a crayon/ink/scratching technique that is very similar to the way she worked. What I like best about it is the fact that I think I paid more for the pad of 9 x 12 bristol board than I did for the rest of the materials... which are, in case you're wondering, a 24 pack of Crayola crayons, india ink, and a nail on a stick. (I've since moved up to the 'Wizard's Giant Box of Crayons,' a worthy investment for all artists ages 3 and up, and real scratchboard tools.) I am still experimenting with crayon resists(unfortunately, mostly with non-fantasy subjects), but I like the way that this piece turned out. It's framed... the black border is the mat, which I also scanned. Don't get too excited about the 'framed' part, I buy frames at yard sales to put my stuff in when I want to stare at it for a while. I paid $1 for the black frame for this... :)
