2003 - Unicorn and Child

Another crayon-resist experiment, 6/2/2003. Once again, 9 by 12 inch bristol board, Prismacolor pencils, crayons, and ink. The green ink color scanned better than the mermaid's blue. This was an experiment - crayon resist was only applied to the unicorn's skin, horn and the boy's cheeks. (In retrospect, it would have been good to add crayon to the BOY'S PUPILS... *grits teeth* oh well. This was a one-afternoon practice piece in addition to being an experiment.) The other details were only colored with pencils, and allowed to fade beneath the ink... Lots to learn from this one. I like how the unicorn turned out. The other difference is that the black outline was added after the color, instead of before. There's meant to be a hint of the ominous. Like the earlier angry unicorn, this is an illustration for a story I was working on with a unicorn who becomes slightly deranged....
