To the elves, death is a figure of ridicule. Unless slain, elves will live indefinitely, and the most ancient of their number are many centuries old. In the Regent’s Court there is always a Death Jester, a Fool whose position ranks lower than even the servants. For unlike the mortal beasts, natural death is a stranger Elvenkind. The Death Jester’s role is to provide entertainment, through ritual dances and satirical humour. He is the butt of jokes and the Regent’s nobles compete to make the most amusing wisecracks at his expense. He is not permitted to touch anyone, but may be hit, pelted, spat upon and jeered at by his betters. Often the child of a peasant family or born with a simple mind, Death’s Fool is amongst the lowliest and scorned members of the Elven Court. Ivanieth smiled ironically as he wiped the blood from his stilleto blade. Ironically because even as the personification of death itself, he was the most unlikely of assassins in the eyes of the courtiers...
