This is a musket-like contraption for shooting prepared spells. The spells are stored in small glass spheres which act as ammunition, and are muzzle-loaded into the weapon. Touching a small crystal to a ritual circle atop the device (works sort of like a matchlock) activates it. The hand spellcannon can only shoot spells of a limited strength; a full-sized spellcannon is needed for more powerful spells. Even so, a weapon like this can pack quite a wallop. Spellcannons are convenient because they allow wizards to contribute to a battle by making ammunition without actually risking their lives on the battlefield. Also, they are very versatile and can play a wide variety of roles depending on what ammunition is available. However, because of the cost of ammunition they are generally fielded only in small numbers as a support weapon.
