As you can guess, this is Sam first picking up Sting as he saves Frodo. As I reread the scenes a few things came through that I wanted to incorporate. The most interesting was that Tolkien describes Sam's actions as though he were using two swords which I had never picked up on before. It talks of him slashing with the other hand, and dropping his sword to steady sting more as Shelob bears down on him. Tolkien also described Shelob's eyes as having a fire inside, and of course that can always be taken figuratively, but as a visual artist it is fun to take that and make it visual. I know that technically sting should not be glowing at this point, but it was the best way I could think of to light the foreground so I used some artistic license. This one took a very long time to make, and as usual the resize for Elfwood really took away a lot. The original dimensions were 12,000x6,000 pixels intended to print at 40 inches x 20 inches. I feel that landscapes are always the weakest part of my paintings so I worked harder on this one and hope it shows. I learned some cool new techniques on this one and am pleased with it in that regard.
