A nice, long project I got to complete in my art class this year. It took forever to finish, but was really worth it! I'm so proud of this picture... it is done TOTALLY with 0.5 mm mechanical pencils, and some 0.7 mm ones for the larger areas on something like a 16" by 22" piece of paper. I tried a new light/hard shading tactic thanks to my art teacher, smoothing out the further away objects and leaving the lines on the ones in direct light. The actual assignment was to develop a sense of perspective... which I guess I pulled off a bit. I used 3 specific reference photos (2 of clouds I took a while ago and one of my mom for the angled neck) and a few general building ones for finding a way to get a really nice looming feeling. I didn't get as high a mark as I thought I wouls on this though. Apparently my teacher marks on a scale of perfection, giving a 5/5 in that category only if its the absolute perfect it can possibly be. It's supposed to prepare you for 'real world' art somehow... but the marks do a wonderful job of critisizing, even if it is totally overboard. Anyway, I got about an 85% on this. As for the story behind the picture...Shale skimmed to the edge of the building and peered out down the darkened alleys, her long brown hair flowing majestically in the wind. Never before had she seen something like this. Sure, it was in her dreams and she thought about it every day, but a clashing of dimensions tearing apart the city was just too unexpected. Luckily, being quite the sword enthusiast, Shale grabbed one of her sharpest, durable blades and headed out to see if she could get into this other world. Nothing was going spectacularly well for her here, and according to what she's been told, a life of figuring out how to pay off monthly bills was just too cliche and boring. She promised herself that she wanted excitement, and now was the chance. As she started out for her fate as a firey ball of a somewhat enigmatic substance shot out from the heavens. Moments before she was hit, Shale turned and realized that it had been aimed for her, but as the flames engulfed her startled body, she knew that she wouldn't perish. She couldn't let her expectations go to waste now, could she?
