This painting was commissioned a year ago by a friend of mine who had no other request than it be a red or gold dragon in action. That left me with little to work with, but I managed to get some inspiration one night and began painting. I finally finished it this past week (third week of May, 2005) and I'm pretty happy with it. Too bad I have to ship it to Louisiana.
I had a great deal of trouble with the fire and the background (being that I'm not, by trade, a painter this is understandable), but I had a lot of fun with the dragon. Using techniques I picked up in drawing class (since I'm not a painter and none of my studios were even related to painting this past year), I managed to get a decent amount of foreshortening and depth; as well as atmospheric perspective, which is brought out a lot more because the object in the foreground is red. It's a lot more impressive in person.
