Cailleach na Siog

"Cailleach na Siog" translates from Irish(gaeilge) as "Old Woman of the Fairy Mounds", Fairy Mounds being where they were believed to have lived. Ancient and wise, a forseer. This was carved from a Cottonwood Burld I cut off of a large piece of driftwood on the gravel bars of the Matanuska River here in Alaska. I originally intended to carve a bowl out of it, but as I got deeper into the burl, I discovered some mildew and rot. By the time I had removed all of the offending infected wood, I had what would become her mouth carved through. The wrinkles were really fun to carve, but this one did a number on my knuckles. This sculpture/carving is available in my Etsy shop:
