Although Annen'ua (Ah-nen-oo-a) could call upon the creatures of the deep with her mind, as could all of her people, she was weak from her struggle with the land dwellers. The sailors above her jeered mockingly from the safety of their boat, and had threatened to dive in after her when she had escaped them. Annen'ua would not be taken prisoner - they could not tear her away from her beloved sea. And so, desperate as she glanced up and saw that one of the few men who could swim had actually joined her in the water, she sought a blade that had fallen to the sandy bottom during the struggle just moments before. Her face hardened for a moment as she sliced into her own tail, knowing full well that any sharks lurking in the deep would heed the smell of fresh blood in the water. Her only fear, then, was whether or not she could control the minds of those beasts that followed the call of her blood. Another mermaid. I expect one more before I'm through with my sea-people kick. ... I like the blood on this one.
