If I had a Lothlorian gallery, this would be more at home there. But since this is the only fantasy picture I've really done in several years, I hope the moderators are willing to let it slide. This was something I was doing when I was trying to come up with an interesting character archetype for a fantasy RPG. I never got around to finishing up the concept or getting into the game, but I did get a pretty interesting portrait out of the effort. I was trying to turn an archetype of fantasy games on it's ear, at least visually. The idea was that Cedric's entry into the party would run along the lines of the rest of the party encountering him in a tavern/bar, and he's half slumped over a drink in the corner. Slightly ragged travel clothes, sword at his side, facial scars. Looks like your typical dusty sword swinging mercenary, eh? Well, you'd be right about the mercenary part. And you'd be wrong about how he does it. He knows how to wield a sword reasonably well. But his main specialty is magic! He's a journeyman level combat mage and a pretty good one at that. He specializes in magic, but doesn't shy away from the blade when necessary. He's a practical sort, and fully follows the wisdom of Vlad Taltos - 'No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife between the shoulderblades will seriously cramp his style.' So now really fancy magics for him. Just whatever gets the job done with the least amount of fuss. You'd be amazed at what can be accomplished tactically with a few relatively minor spells.
