The Great Pumpkin Man is coming! No, really: Jack, an Irishman, was a sly fellow who liked to have a bit of (not always so innocent) fun, and inbetween his many mischiefs he even managed to fool and trap the devil himself, who in order to get free again had to promise Jack not to take his soul. So when Jack died, as all men do, neither Heaven nor Hell would take him, and he was doomed to walk forever alone and in darkness. The devil, however, spared him an ever burning ember from the fires of Hell to light his way, and Jack cut a lantern in which to put it. Ever since, Jack O'Lantern has been wandering the world, looking for a resting place. This, kids, is the story that sparked the tradition for you and me to cut those spiffy pumpkin lanterns for Halloween - and if Jack should see them as he comes by on his lonely path, who knows, he might stop for a chat. Happy Halloween!
