Another character from my story, Tobias is a shape-shifter like his father. For him, the first transformation into his other form is horribly painful and distressing. his body changes shape at a rate that's too fast, and so its literally tearing itself apart as it changes, then reknitting back together. In the end, he finally attains the other shape, but only after nearly an hour of terribly agony. This was sort of drawn as a nose-thumbing to all those people who like to imagine the shift between human forms and more animal forms as being smooth and quick and clean. It wouldn't work that way, if you think about it.
