This is the night before Penthesilea's last battle. Cassandra, who admires her for her her savage grandeur, for her unconquerable pride, has come to beg her not to fight, for she is already wounded, and Cassandra has seen her fate at the hands of Achilles. Penthesilea will not listen of course. She is King Priam's new champion, now that Hector is dead. She holds Hector's dagger, and remembers him, while Cassandra's words go unheeded.
