"Ring of Steel" is a commision that was duel purpose. First, it was a portrait of the client's wife, whom he wanted portrayed as a warrior. The second part was that I had an idea for mechanical tigers. These tigers would look a little like tigers, but be constructed of plates of metal. I wanted them to have a burnished bronze look, and also look organic and magical at the same time. I also wanted to link them to her, to make them seem as if they all shared a connection, hence the eyes. Also I wanted the beasts to look protective of her, like they were deciding whether or not the viewer was a friend, or not...... This is all digital, based off of a few sketches that I did of the client's wife and then some ideas for these tigers. It was done in Corel Painter with a wacom tablet. The resolution in the original file is very high: at it's native resolution, she is life size: the Jpeg before compression was something like 45 megs, while the painter file itself was 154 megs. And all that chain mail took me probably like nine hours to do: one link at a time. Pity you can't pick out the detail here, but given the subject, I wouldn't have done it any other way. I hope you like it!
