Painted in August 2000. Sui is Japanese for water and one of the five elements of the Orient. This one is a gift for my friend Christian Dines Milling. See “Chi” for explanation about the project. Here I tried to include all aspects of water as well: ice, water and clouds. Water is flexible in so many ways. I gave the elemental a calm look, like the feeling you get when looking upon a calm surface. Still just beneath the ice that she leans upon, you see the canals carved by the water. It is the most destructive force on earth, but it is also got plenty of time and thus it becomes creative as well, shaping the surface of the Earth. I find that water and time are connected.
