The main character of Journey to The West epic: Tong Sam Cong (or Genjo Sanzo in japanese)Tong Sam Cong is the only real character in this story, based on a Buddhist Chinese monk named Xuanzhang (602-664 BC) in early Tang dynasty. He started his journey to India in 629 from Tang capital, Chang'an, to obtain Tripitaka/ Sutra, Buddhist holy texts. It took about 8 years, when finally he arrived in Nalanda University in India. He went back to Chang'an in 645.Contrary to the wise and highly educated real character, Tong Sam Cong is always portrayed in novel as a young, naive, and weakling monk who always falls into demon's trap. Luckily, bodhisattva Kwan Im provided him with 3 powerful disciples who always protect him, especially Go Kong.
