The main area in a fantasy world I used for roleplaying some years back was a half barbarian kingdom named 'Auloria'. This is Princess Elara, the crown princess. This means that she will take ower the throne when her father retire. The Aulorians belive in equality between the sexes and that the best suited in a royal familiy shall recive the throne. This is why Elara will get the throne rather then her older brother who do better at his military career. They also belive that no one shall uphold a position until they get so old they cannot fulfil their duties properly. This is why her father will retire at some point rather then keep his post until he dies. There are only one King or a queen in Auloria. They may be married but their partner does not get elevated to King/Queen status, that post are reserved for the actual ruler. Still, the kings and queens of Auloria has very little power, the real power lays with the great houses. But since the King/Queen are always the Chiftain of the most powerful great house as well, they still pack a lot of political power. A comment about the dress/armor, this is for dress duty, not battle. Princess Elara are fully capable to fight if necessary but will not wear a dress while doing so.
