Most people don't even know what an atlatl is. As I understand it, there are actually two versions. One is a metal (weighted) cap placed at the end of a javelin or spear. The weight helps the javelin/spear go further. The second version is a piece of wood with a hook at the end. The wood piece is laid across the forearm and the spear placed on top of it with the butt up against the hook. When hurled, the spear/javelin travels faster and further because the atlatl serves to elongate the wielder's throwing arm. This is an improved fantasy version.
