I got a little tired of drawing so many fair-skinned and haired characters, and so decided to do something a little different. This is a 11x20' ink, watercolor and colored pencil painting of an Indian (not American) princess and her Naga-dragon. I did this painting because I really, desperately wanted to paint a bright red sari. I'd been looking at a friend's sari's the week before and they were so inspiring. The way the fabric drapes as it's wrapped around the body is just so lovely. The patters on the dragon were inspired by a festival that they have in India (and I think they do it in Thailand as well). It's an elephant festival, and they dress up the elephants in rich fabrics and paint elaborate designs all over them. It's very beautiful. I can't remember where I first saw a picture of that, but it really stays with you. I'm pretty proud of the background in this one, it came out really well.
