January 2011 This is a mer based loosely on a flame angelfish. The coloration is fairly accurate, but the shape of the tail is less like the fish that what I normally strive for. This is just what came out of my pencil per se. The upper body pose is inspired by a pose in the book "Drawing Faeries, a believer's guide". This is my FIRST EVER attempt at painting in photoshop. I sketched the image, shaded it, scanned it, and after adjusting contrast, went to town in photoshop. The original image had only the mer and the rock she was sitting on. There are only little bits of photos in the background, all the rest was done with paintbrushes. I think I ended up with something like 40 layers. It was fun, although it took me the better part of 7 hours. My first new fantasy piece in 2 1/2 years. This poor piece got lost in the mod line for awhile because I hadn't cited the photographs in the background. So yes, I did have permission to use the photographs, garnered from a flickr account, but when I went to check for the artist's name to cite them, I couldn't find it. So I took pictures myself to replace the ones which were missing. So now the two photos (used in the ground) are my own.
