'From his body a black man-shape, taller in stature than a man arose....looking around, but evidently not seeing what he was searching for, he lifted his face and screamed, although no sound came...After a few moments, armor made from glistening bone came and affixed themselves to him, giving physical form to what was before a floating shadow...Around his shoulders settled a cloak of white with a diamond clasp in the shape of a skull...in his left hand came a curved staff of grey wood with his own former skull set upon the head, and in his right, a sword that crawled with ancient and arcane runes, as well as grey fire...And upon his head was set a circlet of flame...' This is an excerpt from the account of Arch-Mage Moebius III, who is the only person to have ever witnessed the transformation of a person into a Knight of Shadow. Knights of Shadow are magic-users - of any kind - that died while either owing a great debt (a debt of honor, not money), or after betraying a friend, breaking an oath or failing a promise. They are trapped in this state, neither living dead or undead and are supposed to attone for their sins. But the problem is, is that they are left with no recollection of what they did. They become angry at everything because of this and then kill pretty much whoever comes near them. Underneath their bone armor, they are completely ethereal. Radamanthus was the most poweful mage to ever become Knight of Shadow, and so he became the King of Shadows. Moebius was his friend and brother in arms, whom Radamanthus betrayed in an ancient war.
