the past is a weird old place. Some how things were just so much more exciting then. you could travel the world and discover things so strange that you couldnt comprehend them, let along convince anyone else they exist. June 1874. Had a rather delightfully strange encounter. Was cataloging some specemins and listening to that gramarphone young Elgrove insisted on bringing. Suddenly i heard a rustling right by my ear. Well naturally i leapt up and went for my gun but when i span round the sight that confronted me made me clear forget the thing. It was a bird i suppose, rather like the vultures that they have in africa in its body but brightly hued and of enormous proportions. And such a neck. it must have been twenty feet long and striped green red and gold. Its eyes were exraordinary too; quick, mischievious and yet warm. And here is the queerest thing of all. It had a look as though it wanted something, and it held out one claw to me. Gingerly i took it and before i knew what had come over me we, this bird and i, were dancing like mad things all arround the clearing. We must have danced for an hour when suddenly, in the middle of a dozey doe, i looked arround an the thing was gone, not a trace. And there was young Elgrove straring like he couldn't believe his eyes. It took rather a long time to convince him that i hadn't had a funny turn. He hadn't seen the bird apparently and was rather mystified as to why i had been dancing on my own when he turned up. I explained about the Gigantic Giraffe Bird and i'm sure he believed me, i think... An exraordinary day. I'll swear the thing could tango. Extraordinary.
