Lyra Silvertongue and Will Parry from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. This scene takes place in the third book, The Amber Spyglass. Lyra and Will were forced to leave a piece of themselves, their daemons, on the shores of the lake that marks the border to the World of the Dead. Now they have freed the dead and escaped the Spectres flocking to the great battle waging between Lyra's father, Lord Asriel, and The Great Architect. They are safe in another World, this one inhabited by beings called mulefa. Also in this world is the physicits Mary Malone, who comes from our own world, and who once researched Shadow particles, what people in Lyra's world call Dust. Here, Lyra and Will have been searching for their daemons all day and have sat down in a shady grove to rest, hoping that the daemons will come to them on their own. Lyra has just fed Will a strange red fruit. They are in the embrace of young love, and golden Dust spirals around them, attracted by their sudden awareness of themselves and one another.
