This is Bess, the Landlord's Daughter, who dies for love and becomes a ghost in the poem, The Highwayman, by Alfred Noyes.  He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there     But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,                       Bess, the landlord's daughter,     Plaiting a dark red loveknot into her long black hair. She sacrifies her life to warn her Highwayman lover of soldiers waiting to kill him, and when he discovers she's dead he rides back for vengence, and is killed himself. The ballad closes with both the lovers as ghosts, forever re-enacting their last tender meeting. Some day I hope to make her a Highwayman companion, as he is beautifully described in the poem.
