First in a series of colored pencil portaits. So far there are three, The Maiden, Mother and Crone. When I gain confidence in the male form, I will then do the Youth, Father, and Sage, completing the series (which is actually for a good friend). There is a lot of symbolism in this piece! The Goddess is young and carefree at this stage. The elements of Air and Earth are present; Air as the wind blowing her hair and the feathers adorning her hair. Earth as the grass at her feet and the colors on her face. The greens are for Her abundant Fertility, the yellow in her blonde hair for the warmth of the Sun, which is symbolic of Her lover (or future lover), the young God. The feathers symbolize communication as well as Air, reminding us how important it is to communicate properly. Her face paint not only symbolizes the bounty of fertile earth, but also the desire of women, especially young women to appear beautiful, and the great lengths they go to attain that beauty. The sheerness of Her cloth pays tribute to the burning desire in young women and the conflicted messages they often send! They wrap themselves in cloth, trying to be modest, but often wear clothing that is as seductive or non-existant as possible to attract potential mates (and to make othergirls jealous!). The white is for Her purity of intent and, perhaps even Her innocence. There is much more buried within this piece, but I forget what, so read into it what you will! Based on a photo of me.
