20 The Selkie Wife

He was a good husband, as far as fishermen go. He did not drink, was kind to her and the children, and he almost never beat her. She served him. She fed him, and she bore his children. She had no choice but to do so; he had hidden her sealskin. One day, walking along the beach and looking at the lovely naked lass on the far end of it, the fisherman stumbled over an empty sealskin. Since he was no fool, he immediately realised that the woman he was ogling was a selkie, and that this was her magical hide. Without it the selkie would be trapped in her human skin, bound to the thief until the day she’d find her other self again.   The selkie did not complain about her fate. Indeed, she never uttered a word at all.  If she ever cried because she missed the beauty of the open sea or the thrill of chasing storms, she must have done so in private because nobody ever saw her sad. She smiled a lot and was a good housekeeper, and the entire village thought the fisherman was very lucky to have found himself a selkie bride. Every night though for seven years the obedient wife got up and searched. She checked all the cupboards in  the kitchen, and all the boxes in the boathouse. She looked under the cradle of the baby and under the sheets of her toddlers. She dug holes in the garden and in the graveyard, where the blessed ground burned her feet. She turned every rock, and asked every tree. Finally, after seven years, she even went into the church, although it pains her kind to be in such a building. There, under the altar, she found what she was looking for. Now she runs all the way to the beach, as fast as her feet can carry her. There, looking out over the water, she does not think of her husband or of the children she abandons. She does not remember all the years of loneliness. All that fills her thoughts is the sound of the waves. Pencil,Reference from Lockstock: http://lockstock.deviantart.com/
