He was drawn on the back of an exam paper and named after a rather sullen character in a book I've been reading. I'd carried the idéa around for a while, inspired by those who catch snakes with a grip around the back of their (the snakes') heads. The dragon was supposed to be twisting around and snarling furiously but I only had three hours and I had to finish the exam too. Besides, I kinda like the expression.
