*From January to May 7th (2007), I have performed a degree project as the final of my three years in upper secondary art school. I choosed to illustrate and write about five of my imaginary animals.* First out is Maculua. It is supposed to bail a wasp hive, but there's no wasps visible. Just pretend that they are there, ok? ^^;----- "Of all the landliving mammal predators in Penoga, the maculua belongs to the largest. The widespread T’matoriian coniferous forests and adjacent areas is where it mostly exists, but the largest population is located around the lakes Retne and Sikho. The maculua is a lone rambler, except from the period when the female has got cubs, and occupies in most cases a territory of 1 800 km².The maculua is build for a life as an omnivore. Once sacrificed the speed for the raw strength, the maculua can find food by digging deep and prizing tree trunks apart with it’s big and strong claws. Teeth and jaws are adapted for both meat and herbs; cutting teeth at the front and grinding teeth at the back. The massive jaws allows it to crush bones and hard shell so nothing will go to waste. What the tusks are used for is still unknown. The rust-red coat with white spots serves as a camouflage. As a typical omnivourus predator, it mostly eats berries, roots and bulbs, larvae, mushrooms and carcass. The gipho (an hoofed animal with a blunt snout and big shovel-shaped horns) belongs to it’s favourite preys. The maculua even take bigger rodents, bird chicks and big insects like the honyf. Due to it’s large size, the maculua can’t sneak on it’s prey, so it has developed another strategy that requires high endurance. When the maculua has caught the scent of a prey, it starts to follow it for hour until the prey is too tired to run any longer. When the prey is caught up with, it is killed by a hit agains the head or a bite in the throat. The key to this hunting method is the maculua’s large lungs that can absorb much oxygen, which allows it to run for a longer time. Besides that, it moves in trott. When the animal trotts, the centre of gravity is places straight, so no energy is spent on lifting the body for each step. Compared to the speed, which can reach high level, trotting is the least energy demanding and wearying kind of transportation.”----------Polychromos colour pencils on drawing paper.
