I'm working on a story for a portfolio comic. And this is the first "official" character design I've cranked out. This is also the first pencil-and-ink deal I've done in forever. This is for a sci-fi, steampunkish story I'm working on. I haven't smoothed out some of the finer details, but here's the gist. Hundreds of years in the future, the world begins to change. Some people began to mutate. Not in a horrific sort of way, but a rapid evolving process over a few short generations. But some did not take to this so well and it was seen as a disease spreading through the world. So those unchanged (with the exception of cosmetic things like strange eye and hair color) were sealed off in massive, city-sized domes, protected from the toxic, lethal atmosphere outside. The story takes place several generations after this began, so no one alive remembers life outside. The cities have become extremely packed, buildings built upward all throughout the city so not even the false white light from the dome roof can be seen below the upper levels. Multi-tiered roads connect the buildings, and sealed tubes help people get around. But, due to the nature of human beings, the air outside the buildings has become poisonous. Permits and special gear are required to leave the buildings. But it is possible to get around without being exposed to the fumes. People go their entire lives without setting foot "outside." What we see here is the gear required to be out of the buildings. This guy works at a bakery, but spends half his time making deliveries for his boss. Pencil and ink. Color added in PS.
