Legend of the Lonely Tree

There is a land of green plains and low hills. No woods or forests are known in that land, save in songs and tales brought by travelers from afar. One tree there stands alone on a green hill, the only tree in the land. Curved and bowed is the tree, and some say it has the shape of a young woman raising her hands in the air. The old women, late at night, tell the children this tale:‘Once upon a time there was a fair maiden, who was courted by a powerful sorcerer. He wanted to marry her but she refused, and fearing the wrath of the sorcerer ran away with her lover. But the sorcerer came after them and killed her lover, and he asked her: “Now will you come with me?” and she answered: “I will not”. “Then this shall be your fate” he said, “that you shall become a tree in this land that knows no trees. Alone shall you stand on the hillside while the years pass, sorrowful memories your only company, praying for the oblivion of death”. And from that day on the lonely tree stands on the hill.’.The children smile, as they smile for every fairytale, and they go to sleep and remember nothing by morning. Yet from time to time a young man passes by the tree and remembers the stories of his childhood. He walks to the tree and puts his hand upon a bough, which suddenly resembles an outstretched arm. ‘Awake, awake!’ he whispers to the tree. ‘Your foe is long dead and forgotten. Awake and I will love you, and you shall never know sorrow’. But the tree answers not, and the only sound is the rustle of the leaves in the cool wind.Pencil and watercolor Uploaded 7/2005
