This image was done as part of a series of ideas on the transformation of a woman into a dragonfly. It was also part of a series of four paintings that demonstrated the cycle of life (Birth, Growth, Flight and Death) and the elements (Water, Fire, Air and Earth). It originally contained some human imagery as well. However, it was part of a class project and the teacher thought that it was too literal and told me to remove the metamorphosis and human imagery. I changed it as fantasy art or even hinting at fantasy was unacceptable in college and I wanted a passing grade. Thus, the series appears only to be a dragonfly in its various phases of its life cycle. Unfortunately, I think that all symbolism has been lost and only when I tell the viewer the intent that it makes any sense. This is the Death/Earth piece. It is unfinished. Some say I was bored of the series, I think maybe I wasn’t ready kill off my dragonfly or myself. Anyways, if completed it would be a frozen dragonfly on a stem waiting to return to the earth as we all do when we die.
