'Sensei,' Kochiro began, 'Why do you spend your time teaching me when you could have nearly an position in the land? Your fame is only matched by the honor most men bestow upon you when they meet you.' Satoru merely smiled as they walked, then asked a question in return. 'Have you ever heard of Tieh Wang, from the legendary city of Tian'chih in the darklands to the south?' 'I have,' Kochiro answered, hoping to hear a good tale. 'It has been said that he defeated forty men in the town square in the time it took a man to drink a single cup of wine. Do you know what weapon he used?' Kochiro pondered the question before responding. Tieh Wang was famous for being a master in a number of weapons. 'A staff?' 'No,' Satoru snorted. 'His weapon was three drinks apiece to each of the three loudest bar patrons.' South of the islands of Tsumeryujin lies a major continent. It's a dark land, full of demons, goblins, dragons, and all sorts of odd and foul creatures. Despite the deadly beasts, the harsh deserts, and the consuming jungles, men have forged a civilization. The captial, Tian'chih, known as the 'golden paradise', thrives behind layers of sandstone walls, defying the elements and beasts that roam the land. A thief, dabbler of martial arts, and general slacker, Tieh Wang somehow developed fame as a defender of the people, a reputation he decided to stoke. Unfortunately, he didn't realize the trouble his fame would bring him... Tieh Wang has existed almost as long as Tsumeryujin. I had long decided to have a mainland Asian presence in their world and Tieh Wang became the first example. His name is actually his famous nickname, as he's known among the populace of Tian'chih as the little lithe guy who can take a beating and walk away. He's a combination of Hong Kong action flick stars and reluctant hero. This particular image started off as a doodle that I decided to ink, scan, and color on the computer. On a lark, I toyed with the whole depth thing with blurring of the background figures (and the foreground leg). The final result looks like what it is: a less than spectacular coloring of a doodle. 2001 Pencil and ink, computer colored
