In the Land of Twilight

I blame listening to too much .hack//SIGN for this picture. The music is very rich and vivid and gives me weird ideas. It comes from a dream/vision Riki gets near the end of my webcomic -- in other words, a scene that won't get drawn until I get my Ph. D., at the rate I work. The landscape is Daryn, or a dreamscape thereof. I went overboard with the symbolism here, espcially since only I and my characters get Darynese symbolism. Suffice to say, the glowing circle has the first letters in the Darynese words for the forces of nature, while the letter beneath Riki's feet is the first one in the name of Daryn's (or the dominant religion thereof) guardian deity, Taomae. Riki is dressed similar to the way a novice priest would be dressed -- there are a few differences in the costume, most of which cannot be seen from this angle. About the only real difference that one can see in this picture is that a novice priest would have a red sash (red: Darynese color of positive things), while Riki's sash is grey (Grey: color of taomae-- basically a balance color). Yes, I am having fun with alien symbolism -- nevermind that most of it will get explained in sidebars in order for the audience to get it. This was done with watercolors. I had tried to do a wax resist for the circle, but I hadn't pressed down hard enough on some lines, so I had to go back in with acrylics. Which was a shame -- the wax left a nice golden color as some of the paint was left through. The acrylics were too white -- I should have mixed in some yellow. Not really sure where to put this -- the Phoenix Dawn universe is not quite Science Fiction -- it scans like SF, but I incorporates fantasy elements, like this show of mysticism. But I do adore adding hard-SF elements to it as well. Then again, I like setting fantasy stories on weird astronomical objects -- I've done a double planet and a gas giant's moon. And making them have technology beyond the Middle Ages. Done in watercolors and acrylics -- fall 2004
