zaenker

back then i was reading 'the carpet people' by terry pratchett, a fantastic funny novel about living creatures in our carpets...:) loads of scenes on that book inspired me to do some work, and there's this particular one that really caught my heart: it's this creature called zaenker (in german) and it's a monster. every time a living creature meets his look the creature turns to stone. so other zaenkers have been killed by other species because they were so dangerous to them, and this one hasn't seen a fellow for years, he probably is the last one of them living. to one pope though they were holy and these folks have been building great temples and bringing loads of treasures to worship the zaenker, but they all also turned to stone. the zaenker, feeling soooo lonely, wants to have some friends, but everybody he's looking at turns to stone. so one day somebody enters the temple and in order to keep safe he points a shield to the zaenker, and this one, looking into the mirror like shield, sees a fellow of his own after years. bigger is his disappointment when the shield falls down and the zaenker finds himself all alone again. feeling even worse than before, he starts bawling his eyes out of sadness, he cries and cries and cries and a huge lake is growing around him. because he's already old, he dies short time after that...:(... i tried to put all of these feelings into that picture, him being so incredibly sad even though he has all sorts of treasures around him. the temple being old and lost since nobody can take care of it anymore. an animal turned to stone, captured by ivy as the rest of the temple... again he was supposed to be only a pencil picture when i suddenly started to add more colours to it and watercolours (on wrong paper... aaah, silly me again... oh well...) and more details and a background... i just couldn't stop myself:)! i like him. coloured pencils, watercolours and glittergel ballpoint pens.
