This picture, as the title suggests, is of Elrond grieving at the bedside of his wife Celebrian (that's silver queen in Elvish), who is also Galadriel's daughter. For those who do not know the story, Celebrian was ambushed and captured by orcs on her way to visit her mother and father in Lothlorien. Her two sons rode to rescue her, but she was tortured by the orcs while she was their captive and by the time they reached her she had recieved a poisoned wound. Elrond was able to use his great skill to save her life, but the wound caused her terrible pain which nothing could ease. Finally it became too much for her to bear and she was forced to sail west to the undying lands to seek relief, leaving behind her parents, husband, and children whom she would not see again for many thousands of years, and in some cases never. This may explain why Elrond's sons have such extreme hatred for orcs, even more than other elves, which is considerable. It is a sad and poignant tale, one which is often overlooked in Tolkien lore. Here I am depicting Elrond grieving for his wife while he tries to heal her, before he is sure whether she will even make it. I know my shading stinks, especially on Celebrian's face (I was trying to make her look pale), and the scanner was MOST unkind to the picture, but I like it nonetheless.
