Rapunzel's Descent

This is a combination of one of my favorite myths and one of my favorite fairytales: the Greek myth of Persephone and the story of Rapunzel. Instead of waiting for the prince and the witch to save her/make her decisions for her, Rapunzel cuts off her own hair, and uses it to escape the tower herself! The pomegranate she holds in her hand is the fruit that Hades offers Persephone in order to trap her in the Underworld with him. In this picture, however, the pomegranate becomes a symbol of woman's ability to see through deceptions and make her own decisions. The words 'facilis descensus Averno' are latin, meaning 'the descent into hell is easy'. It refers literally to Persephone's descent into the underworld, and also means that it is easy to trap yourself in a personal hell, when all you need to escape is determination.
