Garuda is the half-man half-bird king of the avian creatures... he is the mount of Lord Vishnu and the son of a mighty sage Kashyap... there are some very interesting stories associated with him.. as a result of a bet that she had lost, his mother had to join the service of his step mother Kadru and his step brothers the serpents... to free her, Garud had to steal the nectar of immortality- Amrit, from the gods and bring them to the serpents...Now since Garud is even stronger than the king of the demigods Indra, he was able to fight his way thru all d celestial blockades and get the sacred pot of Amrit.. But Indra had other plans, he entered into an alliance wid Garud and stole d vessel as soon as our mighty warrior had given it to the serpents... thus, Garud was able to keep his promise and free his mother and Indra managed to ensure that no one except the demigods could get the benefit of immortality! According to some scholars, Garud is the source of the Phoenix myth as garud is also called 'suparna' or 'One with golden wings' in Sanskrit and there are many tails showing similarity amongst these two mythical creatures..The photograph in the background has been clicked by myself..
